T-Mobile G-Slate Tablet Review - Features And Specifications

 By Kevin Statham

Photo: i195.photobucket.com

With its 8.9-inch screen, the T-Mobile G-Slate is noticeably smaller than both the 10.1-inch Xoom and the 9.8-inch iPad 2. The G-Slate is only slightly heavier than the iPad 2, but, like the Xoom, feels heftier, due to its odd weight distribution.

The G-Slate has a thickness of 0.49 inch, a little over one-third thicker than the iPad 2′s 0.34-inch profile. In landscape mode, its screen is as wide as the iPad 2′s, but is about an inch shorter in height. The G-Slate feels comfortable in our hands while typing, whether in landscape or portrait mode, and unlike the iPad 2 with its smooth-as-silk metal casing, the G-Slate isn't as likely to slip from our grip.

On its bottom side, the tablet has ports for Mini-USB and Mini-HDMI-although not Micro-HDMI as on the Xoom. On the top are a volume rocker and microphone pinhole. Two speakers can be found on the right side, with another on the left. Also on the left are the power/lock button, a headphone jack, and the power adapter slot input.

Accessing the G-Slate's SIM card is a little more involved than doing the same on the Xoom. There's a hidden panel on the back, requiring you to push down and slide it, revealing the SIM slot as well as the reset button underneath.

These days you can't have a tablet without a built-in camera, usually two. The G-Slate attempts to one-up the competition by including not only a front-facing 2-megapixel camera, but also a 5-megapixel 3D camera on the back. Technically, this is three cameras in all, although T-Mobile isn't really marketing it that way.

If you've seen pics of the back of the G-Slate, you may have noticed a narrow silver plate across it. You may have also assumed this stylish-looking plate doubled as a kickstand. It doesn't; its only function is to add a little design panache.

The G-Slate is the first Honeycomb tablet with out-of-the-box 4G support, courtesy of T-Mobile's network. The tablet also comes with T-Mobile streaming TV preinstalled as well as an on-demand service called T-Mobile TV, EA's Need for Speed Shift HD, Zinio Reader, and 3D camcorder and player software. Full Flash support is delivered via the Get Flash application, which will install Flash on the device within seconds.

The G-Slate also provides the usual tablet features, such as Bluetooth 2.1 support for audio and peripheral support (including Bluetooth keyboards). The Wi-Fi antenna supports bands up to 802.11n. Embedded sensors for screen brightness, accelerometer, and gyroscope are all included

A 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core mobile processor and 32MB of internal flash memory round out the specs.

The good: With 4G support, a wide-angle IPS screen, out-of-the-box streaming TV features, and Honeycomb support, the G-Slate is currently the best option for Android tablet shoppers.

The bad: Unless you have a thing for two-year contracts, the G-Slate is pretty expensive. 3D implementation is disappointing, and 4G drains the battery something quick.

CompTIA Security+ Made Easy

 By Adam B Thomas

Photo: cbtplanet.com

Cyber Security has been written about a bunch recently. As computers gain complexity, so do the malicious attacks used to beat the security systems built to guard those systems.

Why Get Certified?

Government employees working in the Information Technology and Computer Security fields, are being expected to complete the Security+ exam in order to stay compliant with the DoD 8570 policy. Several non-government companies are also requesting their employees to receive certification as part of their yearly training plan. Industry standard certifications are a great way to make your resume shine. Professionals seeking employment opportunities as a Security Specialist, Network Administrator, or Network Technician may benefit from obtaining a Security+ certification. Getting Security+ certified can also be worth while for individuals who are already employed and hope to advance their earning potential. The knowledge gained from preparing for and taking the exam is a good justification for seeking the Security+ certification.

About the Exam

The exam contains 100 questions which need to be answered in 90 minutes or less. A score of 750 or higher on a scale of 100-900 must be obtained to pass. CompTIA recommends that you have former network and security experience, but it is not mandatory. The exam codes for the current test are SY0-201 and JK0-015. The current pricing for 2011 in the United States is $266 for non-members and $226 for member organizations.

Exam Objectives

The core objectives for the exam range from broad organizational topics to specifics about various cryptography algorithms. Here's the topic breakdown:

Systems Security - 21%

Network Infrastructure - 20%

Access Control - 17%

Assessments and Audits - 15%

Cryptography - 15%

Organizational Security - 12%

It's easy to feel overwhelmed at first by reading the exam objectives, but don't sweat it. Keep in mind that this exam does not demand a degree in Computer Science and with a good study plan you too can have a good outcome. I'll give you some tips on how to increase your chances for passing the exam on your first try later in this article. I passed the exam on my first attempt with a score of 855 out of 900 and you can too!

Where to Take the Exam?

Pearson VUE or Prometric exam facilities both offer the Security+ exam. If you're a government employee you should receive an exam voucher from your command to pay for the exam cost. You will need to visit the Pearson or Prometric website to schedule your exam date once you are ready to take the exam. Don't be overly anxious to schedule the exam! Be sure you are ready to take the test before scheduling.

Preparing for Success

I did self-paced study for the Security+ exam for 2 weeks and passed on my first attempt with a score of 855 out of 900. My primary job responsibility is not as a Network Administrator or a Security Specialist, so my applicable work experience was minimal. I have some book recommendations and a study strategy that will maximize your chance for success on the first attempt. I highly suggest that you obtain a copy of CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: SY0-201 and CompTIA Security+ Review Guide: SY0-201. Begin by reading the study guide cover to cover, making sure to complete the end of chapter practice exams. Then read the review guide cover to cover, making sure to take all of the practice exams too. Both books come with a CD full of practices questions and mock exams. When you can consistently pass the end of chapter practice exams and the mock exams on the CDs with a score of 80% or higher, then you should be ready for the real exam. Take your time, grasp the knowledge, and most importantly have fun!

Exam Day

Here are some closing recommendations that may help make your exam experience go smoother. Review the chapter summaries of CompTIA Security+ Deluxe Study Guide: SY0-201 and CompTIA Security+ Review Guide: SY0-201. Show up early at the exam center so you don't feel as anxious or rushed. Leave your cell phone and other personal items at home or in another secure location since you will be asked to empty your pockets prior to starting the exam. The test administrator will give you a small whiteboard and a marker for note taking during the exam. Don't speak with anyone in the exam facility once you have been seated and begin the exam. While taking the exam make sure to mark any questions you are unsure of and return to them later so you can maintain an unbroken pace of answering questions.

What Is a Bug Defect?

 By Jimmy Drago

Photo: estevenjones.com

A software bug defect is the common term used to describe an error, flaw, mistake, failure, or fault in a computer program or system that produces an incorrect or unexpected result. Most bugs arise from mistakes and errors made by software developers in either the program source code or its design, and a few are caused by compilers producing incorrect code. After a defect has been found, it must be reported to development so that it can be fixed.

Importance of an effective Bug Defect Tracking System

Bug tracking is often presumed to be an unnecessary cost to the organization. But the fact is that effective defect tracking can help in developing quality-rich software products at less cost. But the only criterion for effective defect tracking management is to adopt best practices. Selecting a bug defect tracking system that is easy to use by entering clear and relevant information. Entering details that help with reporting, using screenshots to avoid ambiguity, and avoiding entry of more than one report for a single defect are some of the measures by which a QA test management team can ensure quality and also cut down costs.

Bug reporting is essentially a complex and complicated process that requires precision, detailing and a whole lot of information. Reporting and tracking bugs manually works fine in case of small projects, whereas for mission-critical or large projects, a paper-based approach can result in chaos and confusion.

Bug defect tracking is of paramount importance in software engineering, as complex software systems typically have tens or hundreds or thousands of defects. Managing, evaluating and prioritizing these defects is a difficult task. QA test management teams need an effective bug defect tracking system to log the identified bugs and to monitor them. Defect tracking systems are computer database systems that store defects and help people to manage them. The details given in the defect tracking database are an important source for software metrics like project metrics, progress metrics, testing metrics, etc. These details definitely help the QA managers to effectively gauge the progress of the project and if necessary, put in more effort to improve quality.

The reporting of bug through the defect tracking system is done such that it accurately reports the problem in a way that allows the reader to understand its full impact. In software test management, it is very important that all the bug defects are appropriately recorded/logged, tracked and reported.

A bug-tracking system is an integral part of any software test management as it helps the project team to successfully measure the project's status. It not only helps in logging and reporting bugs, but also in managing and handling them efficiently until they have been fixed. The measurements, also known as metrics help the QA test management team to assess the quality of the software and in making business-critical decisions. Apart from assessing the quality of the software, these metrics such as project metrics, progress metrics and defect metrics also help in evaluating the success ratio of a tester or programmer.

An efficient defect tracking system not only tracks defects but also tracks metrics to make sure everything is going according to the software development plan. It increases productivity at low cost and helps in mission-critical decisions.

An effective bug defect tracking system helps the QA Tester add, search, modify and track bug defects thereby making software test management a quicker process.

iPad and iPad 2 - How to Connect It For the First Time

 By Savannah Groeneveld

Photo: callingallgeeks.org

The first time it's turned on, the iPad will ask you to connect to iTunes. Do this using the USB cable that came with the device. You can connect your iPad or iPad to any computer and it doesn't matter whether it is a PC or a Mac. You must make sure that you have iTunes downloaded on this computer before connecting your iPad to it via the USB cord. iTunes can be easily downloaded from the iTunes website.

Start out by entering the details of your iTunes account (username and password) into your iTunes app on the iPad. This is required regardless of what you plan to use your iPad for. For iTunes first-timers, be aware that you need to create a new iTunes account, which is a fairly simple process. It just takes a little bit of personal information and a valid form of payment (usually credit card).

If you bought an iPad that has 3G or Wi-Fi capabilities, you will be forced to indicate what data plan you would like to purchase for your new device. Look over the options and choose the plan that best suits your needs.

You are now ready to sync your iPad or iPad 2 with your computer for the very first time! Your iTunes account should automatically recognize your iPad, as long as it is connected to the computer via the USB cord. You will see a screen within the iTunes program that has a multitude of tabs running across the top. This is your "sync" dashboard and you will being seeing it often. You can go through the tabs yourself and explore. You will see syncing options that you may or may not want to activate. The choice is totally yours.

How and why do you force a sync?

You will always want to initiate a "forced sync" after you have made changes to your sync dashboard. Syncing after making changes will apply these changes to your device and make the necessary moves to update you iPad. You can do this two different ways. The fist way to cause a "forced sync" is to click on the "Apply" button at the bottom of any of the tabbed pages. This will cause iTunes to apply the changes you made to your iPad or iPad 2. If this is working or you just prefer to sync another way, you can always click the button that reads "Sync" on the bottom right-hand side of your iTunes window.

Syncing your iPad to a computer is one of the first things you need to do after buying your iPad or iPad 2. The second thing you need, which may be even more important for the safety of your device, is an iPad or iPad 2 case. To see if certain iPad 2 cases in stock, check out this list which is always being updated!

One Of The Fastest Technologies

 by alfiery

Photo: risingtech.com

Most of the companies especially the one dealing with e commerce and other related technological solutions on Internet are facing trouble with their central servers as more users are accessing the data during same time. This in fact is jamming the server without providing the requested information.

A new technology called content data network or CDN is developed in order to help such companies to prevent any more bottlenecks on the servers especially during the peak hours. This consists of large number of computers and they are all placed in different points on the network. All these computers are having same data thereby leading to redundancy. As a result whenever a user request for some information, the data from the nearest computer in the network will be accessed and passed on to the user. This will help in the fast delivery of data and also this process takes place without any loss of packets on its way. The users mostly will be requesting for the download of various streaming media video files, image files or audio files which requires high bandwidth for fast download to takes place.

This technology has bought many advantages for all Internet users. This will allow them to stick with their present Internet connection rather than moving with any advanced subscription plans thereby preventing them to pay more for Internet usage. More users are able to access same information at same time without having any trouble. Usually a trouble used to exist when all the data was placed on a single central server. This in a way has increased the number of servers and also increased speed of access and capacity of the network. In case if a fault occurs on any part of the network, it will not affect the functioning of the network as all the traffics will be diverted to all the other computers accordingly and it will perform the task easily without creating any downfall which was not the case with central server.

The number of computers connected within the network determines the architecture of the network. A large architecture is intended to cover large geographical location, and then more number of computers is required. There are many providers for CDN service. You can search on line in order to find different providers. You should carefully go through different quotes of these providers also the services provided by them and accordingly you should select the provider that suits your budget.

CDNFinder gathers CDN Provider data from all across the web and puts them into one convenient place. Examples of providers are Web Streaming,Video Streaming, etc. CDNFinder allows you to search for a specific provider, compare CDN providers, or buy CDN solution if have found what you are looking for.

Hard Drive 101: What You Need To Know

 by James.King

Photo: guru3d.com

I can still remember the day when the first 1 gigabyte hard drive was released. At the time, it was unfathomably large for a personal computer user. "That has more storage that I could ever use." I thought. Today, hard drives top out in Terabytes rather than the gigabytes and operating systems alone like Windows 7 take up 16GB of storage. Today, the size of hard drives varies drastically. Notebook PC have hard drives that vary from 4GB up to 1 terabyte on souped up media laptops. Desktops are typically more robust with most featuring at least a 160GB with many multimedia systems boasting 750GB to 1 terabyte drives at a relatively affordable price (below $1,000). However, what do you really need, and what are the differences between hard drives?

Every computer has a hard drive. They are the main storage facility for your computer. Whenever you install a new program, save a document, or download something from the internet, it is stored somewhere on the computer hard drive. The storage size of a drive is in typically megabytes (1MB equals around one minute of music), gigabytes (made up of 1,000 megabytes), and terabytes (One terabyte equals 1,000 gigabytes). You might expect that the greater the storage capacity the better the drive, but that is not necessarily true. Since so much that your computer does is dependent upon the hard drive, the speed of the hard drive is critical. Hard drive speed is measured in the rate per minute (rpm) that they spin. Most drives will spin at 5,400 or 7,200 rpm but premium specialty drives are available at 10,000 or 15,000 rpm. With a faster hard drive, data can be accessed faster, thus speeding up almost everything that you do on your computer.

While every computer has a internal hard drives, external hard drives are also available which can offer many of benefits. Many users safely store and back up all of their important data against disk failure by using an external hard drive. Additionally, one of the best ways to speed up your computer is by freeing up your hard disk. Many people choose to use an external hard drive to boot up their hard drive if their internal drive is slower. For example, if their internal hard drive spins at 5,400 rpm, they could use an external drive that spins at 7,200 rpm to boot their computer, a process that can often take several minutes, in a much quicker time.

Both internal and external drives have their benefits. Internal drives are safe because of their secure and stable casing. Plus, with the fan cooling available on internal drives ensures that the drive stays cool. External hard drives are housed in boxes outside of a computer and are connected by firewire or USB drives. The potential benefits of an external drive include improved performance if the external drive is faster than the internal drive on your computer, durability versus many laptop hard drives which can be jarred as they are moved and the ability to be used as backup storage.
